Exclusive: Feral publishes original documents of the Ministry of Internal Affairs that reveal Ivica Rozic's (alsoknown as Roka and Bijeli Vuk [White Wolf] ) confession that he murdered Serbs in the Gospic area by planting landmines and booby-trapping their property
How I Murdered Serbs In Lika
Feral Tribune has obtained two official Ministry of Internal Affairs (Police) documents, classified as top secret, which contain horrific details of Rozic's confession about how he methodically murdered Serb returnees in Lika. Feral Tribune has also obtained a secretly recorded audio-tape on which Bijeli Vuk talks in some detail about methods employed in liquidations of Serb civilians. Only Rozic's booby-traps are responsible for deaths of seven persons and injuries of another thirteen. Despite all of this evidence Ivica Rozic is today - due to lack of evidence! - a free man and recipient of a special pension awarded by the president of Croatia personally

Feral Tribune, Split, Croatia, November 4, 2004
Forty-two-year-old Ivica Rozic, also known as Roka and Bijeli Vuk, is today a free man. He lives in Gospic, receives a state pension awarded personally by the president of Croatia, Franjo Tudman, walks the streets of Gospic, meets his comrades in arms and probably reminisces about the times when with unprecedented zeal and dedication he worked on reducing the number of Serbs in Lika. Courts in Rijeka and Zagreb have acquitted Ivica Rozic of the charges that he participated in liquidations of Serbs from Gospic in October 1991, and that after the war he planted mines on property of Serb returnees in Lika. Those mines murdered at least seven and lightly or seriously wounded thirteen persons. Bijeli Vuk was acquitted due to lack of evidence, and his defense attorney has recently announced that he would demand compensation for his client's suffering in custody and the defamation due to mention of his clients name in the context of crimes.
Confessed Executions
Feral Tribune has obtained two official Ministry of Internal Affairs (Police) documents, classified as top secret, which contain Rozic's confession about how he murdered Serb returnees in Lika. Feral Tribune has also obtained a secretly recorded audio-tape on which Bijeli Vuk talks to a trusted person from the Counter-intelligence Service (POA), with whom he was friendly and whose name is known to the magazine, and in some detail discusses methods employed in liquidations of Serb civilians in Lika. The first document was created in late March of 1999. Under the headline "Operational report", there are six pages of single-spaced text. The report is signed by Gospic policeman Stipo Novakovic. The text of the "operational report" (it is interesting that in the report words Serb and Serbs are always written with a small letter, as serb and serbs, while Croats naturally are capitalized, which indicates that problems with spelling are not the only problem affecting of the report's author, author's remark) starts with Novakovic's description of the circumstances leading to his meeting with Ivica Rozic. Namely, on March 22, 1999, around 8:15 p.m. Novakovic was driving through Gospic and noticed in his rear view mirror that a red Volkswagen Golf had been following him for a while. Only when Novakovic stopped in front of the café Vaga, located close to the Lika-Sinj County Police headquarters, the red Golf stopped next to his car and the driver rolled down his window. "I realized that the driver was Ivica Rozic, also known as ‘Roka' and ‘Bijeli Vuk'. Rozic said ‘Good evening Sir, would you mind telling me what you're up to?'. I responded ‘why do you what to know?' to which he responded ‘do you work for the Police?' to which I replied ‘yes'. After that Rozic said ‘I think I know you', to which I responded that we most likely had met before, after which Rozic said that he would like to have a drink with me, to which I responded that we could, since we are in front of a café so that we could step inside," Novakovic wrote at the beginning of his "Operative report".
Blowing Up Returnees
The policeman and Rozic then went to the café and the latter stated that he had wanted to meet the policeman, Novakovic, because he had been informed that Novakovic was supposed to inspect the location at which Rozic had stored various bombs and landmines that he had retrieved from other locations previously booby-trapped by him. "After that Rozic said, you know Sir, I was doing all of that for Croatia," Novakovic continues in his report. "After that I asked him what he had been doing, and he said he had been placing landmines and booby-traps on serb property. I asked him where he had laid those mines and booby-traps and why, and then he started. In 1996 he placed a landmine in a hollow tree trunk and then put that trunk in front of a house of a Chetnik [derogatory term for Serbs] in Svrackovo Selo. The very same day he put a hand grenade in a concrete block and placed the block in front of a house of another Chetnik. To the question why he did that he replied that he wanted to scare Chetniks and make sure they don't come back, since he had seen that they had started to visit their houses. After that he added that he had put another hand grenade in a beer bottle whose bottom he had cut off previously. Then he pushed that bottle in the ground in a field where a serb shepherd was watching a flock of sheep. To the question why he did that he responded that he had previously tried to buy a lamb from that serb with some friends, but that the serb was sort of arrogant and refused to sell the lamb, so he had wanted to teach him a lesson".
After Rozic described how he placed hand grenades in beer bottles, he continued: "Then he told me that in Srednja Gora he had put a bomb in a haystack, and that he had planted the bomb that killed the Matijevics. He also said that there are two eastern orthodox cemeteries in Svrackovo Selo and that he had planted landmines at the entrances of both of them. According to Rozic one of the landmines exploded and killed two serbs, while two Croats were lightly injured. (The other mine was found and destroyed on March 23, 1999) To the question if he had planted other landmines, he responded that he had planted another one among the Cvijanovic family potatoes. That mine killed several serbs. Rozic added that he had just passed the Cvijanovics house that day and had seen his wife putting flowers on a grave in the garden (Dusan Cvijanovic was buried in the garden, near his home), so that it had occurred to him that it would have been good if she had also died. He also planted another landmine in Bunic in a field that serbs had started to till, so that a serb tripped it with a tractor. He also said that in Bunic he had blown up a house. To the question whether he had planted any landmines in garbage, he said that he had, that he had planted a landmine in Krs on the property of a Chetnik named Glumac and another time in a haystack. According to Rozic he did that because during the war they had been contacting Chetniks on the other side by phone and betraying our movements".
And more: "He added that he had planted a landmine in Mogoric in a field in a manure pile, since he had seen some serbs dumping manure on the field the day before. They were happy and looked at him arrogantly. On one occasion Police had some sort of a training exercise in Mogoric and serbs protested with the OSCE. Then he added that in Mogoric he had also planted a hand grenade under a tree trunk, and that his mine had killed general Miscevic. To the question who was with him when he planted the bomb that later killed general Miscevic he answered that he had been alone, because he always plants bombs without witnesses, and even if someone were with him he would not tell because he would never betray a Croat".
Everything For Croatia
Rozic then said that he the only Croat he had harmed was Zdenko Bando, the man who testified about crimes committed in Gospic in the autumn of 1991. Namely, Rozic prepared the bomb that was used to blow up Bando's house. "To the question if he had blown up any other houses he responded that during the war he had destroyed and burnt more houses and killed more serbs than hairs on his head. (...) To the question if he had planted the bomb at the eastern orthodox cemetery in Smiljansko Polje he stated that he had and added that he had pushed over the monument on the grave of Jovo Lemaic, whom he had murdered in 1991, and placed a hand grenade under the monument so that it would explode if the monument were moved. To the question why he had done that he responded that he had tried to kill Jovo's wife, so that she could not accuse him of her husband's death. (...) Then he stated that in 1991 he had been ‘sucked in' all of that, that that should not have been done, but that at the time he was convinced that he was working for Croatia. Then he added that only Franjo Tudman was a greater Croat than him and no one else".
In the continuation of the conversation Ivica Rozic talked how at night he was awakened by strange and threatening phone calls, talked about how he cannot live with Serbs, explained how improvised explosive devices with timing mechanisms are built... Then the conversation was interrupted and Novakovic and Rozic agreed to meet the following day, March 23, 1999, at 9p.m. on the same spot, in Gospic café Vaga. However, due to Rozic's fear of being followed, they did not talk in the café. Instead, they parked in a side street and talked in Rozic's car.
Susak's Instruction: "The Less Serbs The Better!"
Novakovic wrote down the following: "next Rozic said that lately he had been preoccupied with planning the murder of Milan Levar (testified about Croat crimes in Gospic in 1991, murdered in August of 2000, author's remark). He has considered setting an ambush for Levar somewhere outside Gospic, or trying to lure him into the woods, on Mt. Velebit and ambushing and killing him there. Another idea was to dig up several serb graves, scatter the bones somewhere on the Velebit Mountain and then anonymously inform Levar that these were bones of serbs murdered in 1991. Since Levar is searching for evidence of crimes that he wants to send to the Hague Tribunal, he would come right away, and Rozic would then kill him. He also considered kidnapping Levar's child and blackmailing him into silence, but he rejected that idea. He has also considered blowing up Ropac's (Zdenko Ropac has also testified about 1991 events in Gospic, author's remark) house in Karlobag but he rejected that idea and instead started working on plans for his murder. He has traveled to Karlobag, surveyed the neighborhood and searched for a suitable location with a good view of Ropac's yard, from where he could shoot at him from a sniper rifle." Also: "In the end he added that this had been his mode of fighting serbs, because he had believed that that was correct. However, now he realized that that was very harmful for Croatia and he stated that he would not plant landmines anymore. Moreover, if he finds out that someone else has planted or plans to plant a mine he will immediately inform the police".
The other document obtained by Feral Tribune has the title "Official Report" and was written on September 24, 1999, at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Police) terrorism suppression department. On three pages the document reports information obtained in a conversation with Ivica Rozic. After the conversation an anonymous Policeman wrote the following: "Ivica Rozic stated that before the operation ‘Medacki Dzep' late minister [of defense] Gojko Susak had come to Gospic and told them that it would be good if there were as few Serbs as possible in that region. Rozic's interpretation of that statement was that Serbs should be either murdered or expelled and added, I quote, ‘why is Sacic (Zeljko Sacic, former deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, author's remark) playing innocent? He was here and he knows what we did here and why', end of quote. Some ‘jobs' were ‘done' by Rozic, some by others and some were ‘done' by special-forces members and everyone knows about that."
Murder of Milan Levar
In that conversation Rozic again talked about his belief that it was necessary to murder Milan Levar. "He is afraid that he will end up in the Hague. Consequently, he says that on several occasions he has planned how to murder Milan Levar who had testified in the Hague. He considered poisoning Levar by spreading poison on one of his fields, or simply ambushing and shooting him and then getting rid of the body by throwing him in one of the ravines on the Velebit Mountain. He also mentioned a plan he had mentioned before, of collecting bones from Serb graves and scattering them on some location on the Velebit Mountain, then planting landmines on that spot and sending Levar anonymous report that those were bones of Serbs murdered in 1991, so that Levar would be killed by landmines once he came to investigate. He stated that a few days before he had looked for a suitable spot in an abandoned house across the street from Levar's apartment, from where he could shoot him with a sniper rifle. However, he stated that he hadn't yet received a ‘green light' to kill Levar".
Then: "Rozic stated that during the war he had taken away many persons who disappeared. Their relatives may even today believe that they escaped to Serbia, but they are dead. He said that he had killed most of them by hitting them on the head with a heavy wooden bat. Then he would drive bodies to the Velebit Mountain and dump them in the ravines there or leave them on the ground covered by pine branches. Pine branches suppress odor of decomposing bodies, while worms devour the body so fast that pretty soon only bones are left. (...) next he stated that until now he had planted numerous landmines at different locations, but hadn't planted any mines under cars and that he was going to look into that as well, figure out the best way to booby-trap a car so that it explodes once it starts moving. To the question why he needed that information he stated that one never knew".
Despite these documents and information found in them, Ivica Rozic is today a free man and recipient of a special pension awarded by the president of Croatia. While this remains true and the authorities do not officially announce who murdered all those Serb civilians who were returning to their homes in Lika, this country will not be a good place for living. No matter how much [Prime Minister] Sanader and his henchmen try to convince us the opposite.
Excerpts of Conversation with Ivica Rozic, secretly taped by a POA agent in the first half of 2000
I Do Not Feel Sorry For Serbs!
Ivica Rozic and the man hired by the Counter-intelligence Agency (POA) to talk with him had a conversation in the first half of 2000 while driving to go hunting. The POA informer was a friend of Rozic's and his task was to get out of him as much information as possible about liquidations of Serbs in Gospic. The following are the most interesting excerpts from their conversation.
POA: What was the name of Bosnjak's cousin?
ROZIC: Dubajic.
POA: That Simo was also Dubajic.
ROZIC: Sure, they are cousins.
POA: (unintelligible)
ROZIC: No, not at all. His head burst... I went back after a month. I had covered [his body] with pine branches. I went back, picked up the branches... It stank horribly... I went back again, a year later, picked up his head, like this, and it simply crumbled. I threw the pieces around, into sand...
POA: Tell me, how did he croak?
ROZIC: What?
POA: Did he scream when you broke his scull?
ROZIC: He did like this... I put him in the bunker [trunk?] behind, he was croaking and resisting with his legs... Then, I offloaded him, washed the car... You know where? On the way to Rizvanusa, at that curve... Everything was bloody...
POA: What sort of car did you have? How could you fit him in a car, screw it?
ROZIC: It had a bunker behind.
POA: Your bunker?
ROZIC: No, it wasn't my car, it was a military vehicle...(...)
POA: I think Roka that you killed about 40 Serbs? What do you say, friend?
ROZIC: Who knows...
POA: You killed some good looking broads, too bad... Too bad. (unintelligible). Roka, who killed the wife of that judge?
ROZIC: Which one?
POA: You know, the one with a good ass...
ROZIC: Djoko Kalanj's woman? I killed her. I'm just sorry I did not fuck her...(...)
POA: Do they squeal? Do they scream?
ROZIC: Who?
POA: Serbs.
ROZIC: One woman did - why do you kill us? - she said.
POA: Did she?
ROZIC: She did.
POA: Who killed that lot on Lipova Glava?
ROZIC: It wasn't me. I would have killed them, but I wasn't there... We went to move their bodies. They had been dumped into garbage and we were sent to move them.
POA: Well, how did they end up there, you tell me...? Serbs.
ROZIC: Screw it, it seems that was Tudman's policy.
POA: Really?
ROZIC: Yeah, sure. As far s I could tell, we were supposed to kill them close to the front line so that the official story would be that Serbs killed each other...
POA: Did they stink a lot?
ROZIC: Sure they did...(...)
POA: How could you kill your own relatives, Ivanka's husband?
ROZIC: I did not kill him.
POA: Were you sorry that he died?
ROZIC: I don't feel sorry for Serbs.
POA: Did he ask you to help him?
ROZIC: No, he did not even see me. I held the light in front of me. I was in the dark, so that they could not see me... (unintelligible) Once, screw that, we killed a mother and a daughter, you know who... They had taken the husband away and left them behind. Then, I took the mother and daughter and killed them at the plantation. The kid was 17 or 18 years old. She was the daughter of the guy whose car Ifan drove around. Did he work at the weather station? What was his name?
POA: Pantelic.
ROZIC: Yeah, Pantelic. They took him away and left his wife and daughter behind. That is no good... I took the daughter and her to the one who played chess, who did not stand straight... (Unintelligible after this point).
