March 20, 1993 Ozren, Republica Srpska, Bosnia And Herzegovina
Little hero ,
Spomenko Gostic ,14 year old boy who defended his home village during the war in Bosnia
Mother dead, Father dead, stayed with his Grandmother until also she was killed. He had nowhere to go so he joined the Serb territorial defence...
Do you know where the elementary school "Spomenko Gostić"? is located in the Republic Srbska?
The answer to this quiz is simple and short: nowhere.
Perhaps it would be appropriate to at least name one such institution to be "his". Not a single street in his hometown of Doboj and Banja Luka is named after this brave little hero. Places where before and after the bloody war in Bosnia have
changed hundreds of street names, but the authorities never remembered the brave 14 year old hero who gave his life for our freedom.
Spomenko GOSTIČ life was short, brutal and had a tragic end.
Of this biography his cousin Sasha Malešić reminds us.
- Spomenko was born in Doboj August 14, 1978 and died March 20, 1993. in the village Jovići in Ozren. He was a member of the RS - says Sasha Malešić.
Spomenkos friend Velibor Tripić recalls the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina:
- Beginning of 1992. there was raging a real war.
Village Jovići, where Spomenko lived with his mother, was surrounded by neighborhoods with predominantly Muslims. They used to be good neighbors, and then suddenly they were on different sides of the war line.
His mother has since died, and at the beginning of the war Spomenko and I volunteer in the Serbian army and become messengers.
In September 1992, Velibor recalls, under a rain of shells fired from the Muslim side at Jovici, Spomenko grandmother dies and he is left alone.
- The only protection he had was in the military. With courier duties "promoted" to food supplier. Entrusted with horses and wagon, and responsibility to deliver food along the long line of defence. So Spomenko daily, with two horses,
chased from trench to trench.
Then tragedy struck - He ran into a minefield. Horses dies and Spomenko got injured.
As soon as he recovered he again put himself at the disposal of the army.
He was the right hand of the commander of defense.
However, the offensive power of Muslim army made the people evacuate the village and the Serb defenders to withdraw and Jovići was left deserted.
BUT Spomenko stayed with a handful of soldiers to defend it, to establish the lines and return lost positions - Tripić recalls.
After the situation calmed down in this part of the front Spomenko stays with the soldiers - "GUNNERS".
Offer from Paris
A Serb who lived in France met Spomenko on the battlefied.
- I found out about Spomenko watching a TV channel and came from Paris with the intention to take him home and - to adopt him.
- Spomenko turned down the offer, saying: "Before I`m walking in Maglaj together
with my fellow comrades, I`m not leaving."
He thanked the Frenchman for the invitation to live in Paris, and promised he will accept it when the war is over.
In March, 1993, a shell was fired from the Muslim side, killing five Serbian soldiers, and our hero was mortally wounded.
March 20, 1993 Spomenko Gostić died on the hill Visici, and was later buried with his comrades in the village cemetery of Jovići,
which belongs to the municipality Maglajska.
Unfortunately, today the village is bordered by Bočinja, and some claim that to be the stronghold of Wahhabi.
